After illness had prevented him from painting traditionally, he set about creating paper cutout collages, often on an enormous scale, called ‘gouaches découpés’. By manoeuvring scissors through prepared sheets of paper, he inaugurated a new phase of his career. He referred to the process as ’painting with scissors.’
